Oleato coffee is a new coffee blend trend using virgin olive oil by Starbucks. Italy is indeed an important part of Starbucks.
Oleato Coffee was born out of Howard Schultz’s travels. The idea came from two things Schultz drinks in the morning.
In Oleato Coffee, there is a unique texture created when Partanna’s extra virgin olive oil meets coffee. Whether from a cold or hot drink, Oleato Coffee has a velvety buttery flavor. This flavor enhances the coffee and lingers beautifully on the palate.
The rise of the Starbucks Oleato Idea
It started four decades ago, when Howard Schultz walked the cobblestone streets of Milan, Italy. He felt the romance of an espresso bar, which led him to found Starbucks.
Schultz’s experience was a pleasant one in an Italian coffee shop. Later, he brought the experience to Starbucks and America.
Last year, when Schultz was traveling in Sicily, he came across an interesting custom. The Mediterranean custom of drinking a spoonful of olive oil every day.
Since then, Schultz has been enjoying a spoonful of Partanna’s extra virgin olive oil. He makes it his daily ritual, in addition to his morning coffee.
That’s how the idea for Oleato Coffee came about. Combining both of Schultz’s favorite morning rituals. Schultz discovered the alchemical deliciousness of Oleato Coffee infused with Partanna’s extra virgin olive oil.
Starbucks Oleato Journey
Schultz brought his invention back to Seattle and the Starbucks beverage development team. Amy Dilger as Starbucks’ lead beverage developer eventually took up the task.
Dilger learned about olives and their deep connection to Italian culture. From hundreds of varieties, Partanna’s extra virgin olive oil blend was created for Starbucks.
There is actually another variety, the Nocellara del Belice (Castelvetrano) olive. This variety has a vibrant and buttery flavor.
Dilger even spoke to a family of olive farmers. They nurtured Partanna’s ancient olive trees on Sicilian soil for up to four generations.
Not only that, he learned how to pick olives. Then, he learned how to cold-press them for several hours to retain their exceptional flavor.
Dilger had never tried combining olive oil and coffee. So, he thought of other dishes that highlight olive oil. Some of the other foods are Greek yogurt drizzled with olive oil, sea salt ice cream and olive oil cake.
After that, he started experimenting in his beverage development kitchen. He infused Partanna’s extra virgin olive oil with some of his favorite coffee drinks. He wanted to create an extraordinary and new experience.
