Mixologist Techniques for Beginners

Before trying to enjoy a homemade coffee mocktail, you should first understand the following basic techniques. In learning how to mix mocktails, it is necessary to master the techniques of making, stirring and shaking.

Preparing Coffee Mocktail Ingredients

Before making a coffee mocktail, you should take the time to measure the ingredients precisely with a jigger. Generally, a jigger has two parts that function to measure ingredients. The easy side of the jigger is usually used by baristas to measure ingredients.

Stirring Mocktails

Stirring may sound easy, but to make a mocktail, there is a different technique that needs to be practiced. Combine the ingredients in a mixing glass using a long-stemmed spoon. Stirring a mocktail requires a very gentle touch. The purpose of this stirring is to chill the drink.

In cocktail making techniques, stirring aims to dilute the alcohol to make it more enjoyable. In addition, stirring slowly can make the mocktail clearer without bubbles.

Shaking Mocktails

There are two kinds of mocktail shaking techniques:

Wet Shaking

This technique is done using ice. The trick is to put the ingredients in a mocktail shaker. Fill the ice about two-thirds of the way. Then, close the shaker tightly and shake with two hands for 15-20 seconds.

Shake the drink until there is condensation on the outside of the shaker. Afterward, strain the liquid drink into a serving glass.

Dry Shaking

Unlike the former, dry shaking does not require ice. Usually, this technique aims to mix mocktail ingredients that contain cream or egg whites. All ingredients should be well emulsified to give a deliciously light mouthfeel.

The trick is to add the ingredients to a mocktail shaker. Close the lid tightly and shake for 30 to 60 seconds. Usually, a dry shake can be followed by a wet shake which serves to chill and dilute the drink before serving in the glass. However, as a side note, if effervescent ingredients are used, the mocktail should not be shaken.

Not all cafes sell coffee mocktails. Even if they do, this type of coffee is usually priced at twice the price of regular coffee drinks. However, after knowing the techniques above, you can make your own mocktails at home.
