Jakarta, October 19, 2022
The year 2022 is being called the perfect storm for coffee commodities. This was conveyed by Moelyono Soesilo, Global Coffee Expert at the event Coffee Market Outlook 2023 with the title ‘ Challenge and Opportunity ‘ at Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta. “So, in 2022 even though we (coffee business people) are in different boats, we are experiencing the same storm,” said Moelyono Soesilo.
In 2022 the coffee ecosystem is facing coffee production quality problems
This coffee quality issue has been a major focus throughout 2022. The main reason is that Indonesian coffee production is over-fermented, experiencing a level of maturity that is far from good.
To prove his hypothesis, in his presentation he showed his research by showing two examples of coffee trees, namely: Tanggamus Coffee and West Lampung Coffee.
In the case of Tanggamus coffee, “the number is getting lower,” says Moelyono. Production levels have dropped considerably. Meanwhile, in the case of West Lampung coffee, the fruit is much smaller. If the rain intensity is high, it is predicted that West Lampung’s coffee productivity may also decline.
Also present at this event was Judith Ganes, Global Renowed Cofee Analyst. Both Moelyono and Judith, in addition to discussing coffee conditions throughout 2022, also predicted the future development of the coffee market. According to Judith, the coffee ecosystem may experience ups and downs in the future. This is due to the Russia-Ukraine war which has had a serious impact on the supply chain and prices. “We must see this (war) on a global scale. Perhaps not direct impact to coffee commodity, but in global bigger picture its very have impact for coffee industry.,” Judith said.
According to Moelyono Soesilo, in 2023 coffee consumption will return to normal compared to previous years. He added that the mobility of people is getting higher, if you look at foreign tourist visits, it is starting to be crowded, and hotel occupancy is also starting to be high. He concluded that high mobility has a correlation with coffee consumption. Both speakers agreed that although there will be ups and downs, the coffee business remains a promising industry.
