Research published by the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a journal of ESC.1, drinking coffee can extend life. Those who drank coffee regularly every day were 12 percent less likely to die. The results of the coffee study were published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). This ESC study examined the relationship between coffee type and the incidence of arrhythmia, cardiovascular disease, and death. The study used data from the UK Biobank, which recruited adults aged between 40 – 69 years.
Cardiovascular diseases consist of coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, and ischemic stroke.
The study involved a total of 449,563 participants who were free of arrhythmia or other cardiovascular disease at the start of the study. The average participant was 48 years old and 55.3 percent were women. They were divided into four groups: those who enjoyed caffeinated ground coffee, those who chose decaffeinated coffee, those who preferred caffeinated instant coffee, and those who did not drink coffee at all.
Participants received a questionnaire asking how many cups of coffee and what type of coffee they drank each day. As a result, 44.1 percent of participants drank regular types of coffee, 18.4 percent drank ground coffee, and 15.2 percent drank decaffeinated coffee.
In this study, there were 100,510 or 22.4 percent non-coffee drinkers who served as the comparison group. They serve as a comparator for the incidence of arrhythmia, cardiovascular disease, and death. Outcome information was then obtained from medical records and death records. During the follow-up period, about 12.5 years, 6.2 percent of participants died, 9.6 percent of participants were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, and 6.7 percent of participants were diagnosed with arrhythmia.
All types of coffee are associated with reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease. The greatest reduction in mortality risk and lowest risk of cardiovascular disease was seen in the amount of coffee consumption of two to three cups per day, which was compared to not drinking coffee.

Caffeinated ground coffee reduces risk the most
The researchers found a “significant reduction” in the risk of coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, and stroke for all three types of coffee mentioned by Professor Kistler. However, only ground coffee and instant coffee with caffeine can reduce the risk of irregular heartbeat called arrhythmia. Decaffeinated coffee does not lower the risk.
In research conducted by the ESC, it has been found that drinking two to three cups of coffee a day is associated with the greatest reduction in premature death, when compared to people who do not drink coffee. In detail, consumption of ground coffee reduced the risk of death by 27 percent, followed by 14 percent for decaffeinated coffee, and 11 percent for caffeinated instant coffee.
“It is likely that non-caffeine compounds are responsible for the observed positive association between coffee drinking, cardiovascular disease, and survival,” says Kistler.
The link between coffee and reduced risk of heart disease and stroke is not so strong. Drinking two to three cups of ground coffee a day can reduce the risk by 20 percent, while drinking the same amount of decaffeinated coffee only reduces the risk by 6 percent. Even higher, drinking two to three cups of instant coffee can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by 9 percent.
Based on the same study, the data changes when it comes to the impact of drinking coffee on irregular heartbeats. Four to five cups of caffeinated ground coffee a day can lower the risk by 17 percent, while two to three cups of instant coffee a day reduces the chances of arrhythmia by 12 percent.
