By 2022, Indonesia will rank among the top five coffee-producing countries in the world. In previous years, Indonesia consistently held this position, demonstrating the stability of its coffee production year after year. Factors such as soil and climate play significant roles in why coffee plants thrive in Indonesia.
Additionally, the high demand for coffee drives the rate of production. Due to this demand, farmers are incentivized to produce more.
Indonesian Coffee Production Data from Year to Year
But what are the exact figures for Indonesian coffee production over the years? The statistics company, Statista, provides data on Indonesia’s coffee production from 2012-2021. They also offer details on coffee production by type, including robusta and arabica.
From these data, coffee production in Indonesia began to increase in 2017. The following data on Indonesia’s coffee production is reported by Statista.

From the data above, it can be seen that Indonesia’s coffee production experienced a remarkable decline in 2014. Vice Chairman of the Association of Coffee Exporters and Industries (AEKI), Pranoto Soenarto, explained that some of the factors causing the decline in production are climatic factors, lack of fertilizers, and improper post-harvest management.
As is well known, coffee plants must be grown in the right climate. The plants will be damaged by irregular rainfall, drought, and sudden storms.
In that year, Indonesia also still lacked farmers who only focused on coffee plants. Most make coffee farming a part-time job. This causes the coffee beans to be sold immediately and not processed again after harvest.
For comparison, Indonesia is the country with the largest decline rate among other countries, which is around 23 percent.
Countries such as Brazil and Uganda only experienced a decline of under 10 percent. Brazil experienced a 7.8 percent drop in production and Uganda experienced a 5.5 percent drop.
Coffee Consumption Trends Around Us
Despite experiencing a drastic decline, until now the Indonesian coffee industry continues to rise. In the last five years, it has even reached 700,000 tons and has continued to increase in the last three years.
One of the reasons why Indonesia has been able to achieve this level of coffee production is due to changes in people’s lifestyles. This was conveyed by the Director General of Agro Industry of the Ministry of Industry, Abdul Rochim in 2019.
Based on data, Indonesian coffee production in 2019 has reached 752.5 thousand tons. The increase is due to the growing trend of coffee consumption. People are starting to feel comfortable going to cafes, warkop, and other places to get the coffee they want.
In addition, there is also a trend of contemporary coffee that adds to the passion of young people to sip coffee, either before starting the day or when closing the day.
By 2022, coffee production will almost reach 800,000 tons. To be precise, the resulting production was 794.8 thousand tons. Currently, the trend of coffee consumption is also starting to develop to the Ready To Drink (RTD) coffee stage. Every year, it becomes easier for consumers to get the coffee they want without having to wait too long.
According to data from Euromonitor, RTD coffee could sell as much as 225 million liters by 2022. This data is expected to continue to increase following the needs and demands of the community.
Looking forward to 2023, there’s hope that coffee production will further rise. However, challenges like the El Niño effect threaten these prospects, with some projections suggesting a potential 30% drop in Indonesia’s coffee output due to this climatic phenomenon.
Even so, precautionary efforts are being made to prevent the adverse impacts caused by this el nino.
